The 205th Topical Symposium of the Magnetic Society of Japan / The 56th Topical Symposium on Spin-electronics

Prospects of new nanomagnetic structures and spin-manipulation techniques for future magnetic devices
~ New phenomena pioneered by chiral magnetism and spin orbitronics ~

A new research field called “spin-orbitronics” which utilizes the interaction between “spin” and “orbit” has been attracting a great deal of attention. The research activity on the spin-orbitoronics has been expanded throughout the world since it is expected to create a principle of operation for the novel magnetic and spintronic devices including a large-capacity nonvolatile memory and a high-speed arithmetic device in the near future. Above all, “chirality” originating from the peculiar spatial symmetry in nanoscale layered structures or crystals is proposed to use for controlling the nanomagnets since the chirality is closely linked to the spin-orbit interaction. For example, new phenomena such as generation of the magnetic structures called Skyrmion in a chiral magnetic crystal and control of the domain wall motion using the chirality of the domain walls have been discovered. On the other hand, beginners of the research field might feel it is difficult to understand researches related to the spin-orbitronics and the chiral magnetism due to necessity of a wide range of knowledge of physics. In this symposium, a wide variety of topics including basic knowledge and latest researches will be introduced. We invite seven outstanding lecturers of this research field. We expect your active participation.
