Material separation technique using high magnetic fields
“Magnetic separation” is a technique to separate materials using the difference of their magnetic properties. Although the magnetic separation is a simple process based on a quite familiar phenomenon to most of people, it is applicable as a way of separation from fine particles to ions regardless of whether they are magnetic or not by the application of superconducting magnets, magnetic filters, and pre-treatment such as the magnetic seeding. Target materials attracted on the magnetic filters can be collected easily by the removal of magnetic field. Therefore, the magnetic filter can be reused. Owing to these features, the applications of the magnetic separation are presently being studied in industries and medical or environmental field. In this topical symposium, at first, the history and the theoretical background of the superconducting magnetic separation will be reviewed, and then, examples of recent practical applications will be introduced.
